I AWAIT

Poem for Mary Magdalene
from the play «Mary M and the
Mad Prophet» by Griselda Steiner

I’ve tasted the tongues of men
Taken their weight
Released their waste
I’ve tasted the bitter herbs
Green and brown leaves
That made me bleed
When I was young
My body warm with the sun
I was with men
By the river
In the tall weeds
In the fruit groves
Under shade trees
In tents
On the hills
I slept in the sands
Wearing a cool dress of winds
Like a black star
Deep in the hearts of men
They kept my secret
And I wandered free
They gave me bread and meat
There on the road
Men threw stones at an adulteress
Blood ran over rocks
I heard her cries of anguish
I felt her death
Then the men saw me
Dropping their rocks on the road
Hatred in my breast
Lusting in my loins
They took me on the ground
Opening a cavern
Of obsession
I lay in the dirt
Broken
In pain
I wore the wounds of my life
On my soul that night
In the morning
In the pale sun
I filled my body with wine
Nothing in my mind
As I bathed in the River Jordan
Dressed in my hair
John prophesied the coming
Of the great teacher – Yeshua
The blue water
Washed my feet
Every day John saw me there
Dressed in my hair
One day
My body empty
He knew my heart was ready
John baptized me
And now dressed in faith
I AWAIT

Poema para María Magdalena
de la obra «María M y la
Profeta Loca“ de Griselda Steiner

Yo he probado las lenguas de los hombres
Llevado su peso
Liberado sus desechos
Yo he probado las hierbas amargas
Hojas verdes y marrones
Que me hicieron sangrar
Cuando era joven
Mi cuerpo caliente con el sol
Yo estuve con los hombres
En el río
Entre el pasto crecido
En arboledas frutales
Bajo árboles de sombra
En las tiendas
Sobre las colinas
Dormí en las arenas
Con un fresco vestido de vientos
Como una estrella negra
Profunda en los corazones de los hombres
Ellos guardaban mi secreto
Y yo vagaba libre
Rota
Adolorida
Llevé las heridas de mi vida
En mi alma aquella noche
Por la mañana
Bajo el pálido sol
Llené mi cuerpo de vino
Sin nada en la mente
Mientras me bañaba en el río Jordán
Vestida en mis cabellos
Juan profetizaba la venida
Del gran maestro – Yeshua
El agua azul
Lavaba mis pies
Cada día que Juan me vio allí
Vestida en mis cabellos
Un día
Mi cuerpo vacío
Supo que mi corazón estaba listo
Juan me bautizó
Y ahora vestida de fe
